El Médano is a beach-and-wind town on Tenerife's south coast where you can work European hours and be in the sea by the time you close your laptop. We have two flats for stays of a few months, with everything on foot and the airport a quarter of an hour away.
Yes, if you want routine and the sea more than nightlife. It's a small town where everything is within walking distance, with coworking spaces, a beach in the centre and Tenerife South airport about 10-15 minutes away by car.
It isn't a resort. People live here all year, many of them originally from elsewhere in Europe, and the wind has made it Tenerife's best-known windsurfing spot, and a kitesurfing spot too. Weekdays have a small-town rhythm: coffee, work, a walk along the shore and some sport in the late afternoon.
The climate makes the routine easy to keep. At AEMET's Tenerife South airport station, the average high runs from 21.7°C in January to 28.4°C in August, and it barely rains – about 132 mm a year.
The Canary Islands keep the same time as London, Dublin and Lisbon: UTC+0 in winter and UTC+1 in summer. You're one hour behind Paris, Berlin, Amsterdam or Stockholm all year round, and two behind Helsinki.
The clocks change on the same day as the rest of Europe, so the gap never shifts. If your team in Berlin starts at 9:00, you log on at 8:00; when they finish at 18:00, it's 17:00 here.
That leaves daylight to spare. Even in midwinter the sun doesn't set before 18:10, and in June it sets after 21:00. The US East Coast is usually five hours behind, so afternoon calls with New York fit in too.
You can work from the flat or mix it up with a coworking space. El Médano has coworking spaces with day passes and monthly plans – handy for call-heavy days or for meeting other digital nomads.
Surfing View has a desk with a monitor in the living room, a few steps from the balcony over the sea. La Jaquita has a spacious open-plan kitchen and living area and a large terrace, in a residential complex with a pool.
If your work depends on your connection, ask us about the one in the flat you're interested in before booking and we'll give you the details.
For more options around the island, Tenerife Work & Play – the Tenerife tourist board's brand for remote workers – lists coworking spaces, co-livings and services for people who work remotely.
In El Médano, the 6 pm plan is getting on the water. The Tenerife tourist board counts around 300 windy days a year: from October to April it usually blows at 10 to 25 knots, and from May to September at 15 to 30.
If you're new to windsurfing or kitesurfing, learn with a school – the tourist board says this spot isn't suitable for unsupervised beginners.
Not a water person? Montaña Roja has a waymarked 1.2 km trail from town to the summit, and La Tejita, a kilometre of sand in a protected nature area, lies on the other side. The promenade is made for an evening run or a sunset.
Weekends go a long way: Mount Teide, the green north of the island, or La Gomera by ferry from Los Cristianos.
Tenerife South has direct flights to cities across much of Europe, including the UK and Ireland, varying by season. Useful if you need to fly back for a meeting or have friends coming out.
There's no direct bus from the airport: take TITSA line 10 to San Isidro and change to the 408. The 470 links town with Los Cristianos. The rechargeable ten+ card, or its app, works on buses and trams across the island.
Day to day, the town has supermarkets, two pharmacies and a public medical centre.
A written temporary rental contract is signed before each stay. You get a fixed price on request, based on your dates.
If you're not an EU citizen, Spain has a visa for international remote workers, often called the digital nomad visa. The official information is published by the Ministry of Inclusion, Social Security and Migration at inclusion.gob.es. We don't give immigration or tax advice, so always check the official source.
Surfing View is on the seafront by Playa Chica, with a desk in the living room and a balcony over the bay; La Jaquita is in a residential complex with a pool and a large terrace. Both sleep 4, with 2 bedrooms and 1 bathroom.
